What is depression?
« on: July 27, 2011, 01:44:12 AM »
Depression is an illness that causes you to feel sad, to lose interest in activities that you've always enjoyed, to withdraw from others, and to have little energy. It's different from normal feelings of sadness, grief, or low energy. Depression can also cause people to feel hopeless about the future and even to think about suicide. Many people, and sometimes their families, feel embarrassed or ashamed about having depression.

Depression is more than just feeling upset or sad. It’s a serious illness that leaves you feeling down most of the time and finding it hard to cope from day to day. Depression is the most common mental health problem for young people. Around one in five young people will have experienced depression by the time they reach adulthood.

Depression can also have long-term effects.  Depression may lead to young people dropping out of school or quitting their jobs, which could further affect their social lives and career options.  People who’re depressed as young people are often at risk of depression in adulthood as well.  And untreated depression is a risk factor for suicidal behaviour.

Depression is a mental illness. It needs treatment--counselling, therapy, medication, etc. I also have found from persona experience that for me the best treatment has been regular strenuous exercise.

The first step to getting appropriate treatment is to visit a doctor or a mental health expert. Some medications and some diseases, such as viruses or a thyroid gland, can cause the same symptoms of depression. The doctor can rule out these possibilities of doing a physical examination, laboratory tests and interviews. If your doctor does not find a disease that can cause depression, the next step is a psychological evaluation.

The disorder consists of feelings of sadness, which can last days or weeks at a time. This causes you to lose interest in life and themselves. It's a difficult thing to overcome and most depressed people simply say that is not depressed at all.
