It certainly did not surprise me when I would receive an endless amount of E:mails from my listeners on radio sharing their experience of depression going away in a short time after being on 1,000 mg. of Omega 3\'s daily. Nutrition is key. When you eat highly processed foods, sugar or drink too much caffeine, your body as well as your brain gets \'aggravated\' leading to mood disorders or depression. Read on for my list of foods that help you prevent this from happening in the first place.<br />
<br />
1. Omega 3\'s (fish oil) - is a great place to start so make sure you look for a good quality Omega 3 fish oil supplement that says enteric coated on the label. This will make it easier to digest and you will not burp up a fishy taste. Of course, include fish in your diet at least twice a week.<br />
<br />
2. Fill your plate 1/2 full of vegetables at lunch and dinner. Build your meal around vegetables as much as possible. Not only will they help you stay full but you will be filling up on antioxidants which prevent free radicals (toxins, chemicals and pollutants) from attacking your healthy cells in your brain as well as throughout your body. The brigher and richer the color, the better.<br />
<br />
3. Limit your fruit intake to 2 servings per day. Fruit is a natural form of sugar and is full of antioxidants too but people tend to eat too much of it which can create a craving for more sugary foods and beverages. 4. Eat a handful of nuts for a delicious snack which are full of good fats and will help reduce inflammation throughout the body as well as your brain. Everything gets inflamed as we get older which can lead to mood disorders in the brain from this inflammation so eating nuts will help keep that in check.<br />

5. Enjoy avocado everyday - this is one of the best ways to get some good fats for the brain. Add it to salads or enjoy guacamole with grilled chicken breasts or fish.<br />

6. Eat Greek yogurt which will put some good bacteria into your gut building your immune system and your mood.<br />

7. Mini-meals every 3-4 hours is a great way to stabilize blood sugar levels and your mood.<br />

8. Do not skip breakfast. This is a great time to begin your day with some of the foods listed above, fruit, Greek yogurt, peanut butter, etc. Add them to a blender for a quick meal on the go.<br />

If your job is demanding and you feel tired, frazzled and over burdened by demands from your colleagues, you can practice easy relaxation exercises at your desk or work station. For example, sit near the edge of your chair with your feet flat on the floor and your hands resting on your lap. Lengthen your spine, slowly arch your back and tilt your head back. Relax and take three deep breaths. Slowly return your body back to centre. Repeat 3 - 5 times before resuming work.<br />

3. Lack of Privacy<br />
When you have small children it can be hard to find the privacy and peace and quiet you need to practice relaxation exercises. Children have an uncanny knack of knowing when to disturb you - particularly when you wish to have me-time. Even at a gym or health club you may feel self conscious about practicing yoga in front of others. Have no fear as you can gain the same benefits by practicing in bed. As you wake, take a long deep breath. As you exhale, slowly stretch your body awake. Keep your legs straight out on the bed and gently point and flex your toes back and forth 5 - 7 times.<br />

An experimental handheld device that delivers pulses of magnetic energy to the back of the head may be effective at warding off migraines in some patients, according to a new study funded by the device’s manufacturer.The technique, known as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), could be the first effective non-drug treatment for the excruciating headaches, as well as the first treatment with the potential to prevent migraine before the pain begins.The study participants were instructed to give themselves two pulses to the back of the head within an hour after experiencing an aura, the visual disturbances that signal an oncoming migraine in up to 30% of patients.<br />
<br />
“I think this device is a really good option for people who want to avoid taking medication, or who have contraindications, side effects, or lack of response to available medications,” says lead study author Richard B. Lipton, MD, a professor of neurology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, N.Y. Neuralieve, a start-up company based in Sunnyvale, Calif., manufactured the devices used in the study. The company also funded the study, and Dr. Lipton and several of his co-authors have stock options in Neuralieve, or other financial connections to it.<br />
<br />
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved the device, but if it does earn approval, migraine patients could use it as an alternative to drugs, or in conjunction with medications, Dr. Lipton says. The FDA has already approved a TMS device to treat depression. Unlike that device, which is heavy and found only in doctor’s offices, the migraine device could be used at home.<br />
<br />
Dr. Lipton says he’s not sure how much the device would cost, but that people probably would be able to lease or rent it inexpensively, before buying, to see if it worked for them. “Purchasing a device if you don’t know if you’re a responder doesn’t make any sense to me,” he says.<br />
