I am looking for advice as to what people who have travelled/lived in EE would reccommend as the best type of footwear for the winter (I am coming from Australia). What I am thinking is a pair of hiking type boots made from a waterproof material (goretex maybe?) that I would wear with a thick pair of socks (like ski socks or explorer socks) ?

If anyone had any suggestions as to where I could find such a pair of boots around the $200 mark I would be very grateful. I live in Canberra, so limited shopping choice but will be in sydney in a couple of weeks where there is bound to be a number of international chains.

I will x post this on the EE branch.
Being Canadian Get accepting my opinion boots that you want, wear good socks etc. .. But a great way to keep your feet warm is to wear a head covering good 90% of your loss of heat through your head. I mean what type of footwear in Canada throughout the year, and it should go.
Try shops and outdoor stores sales of military equipment, or specialty stores such as Shoe athlete's foot. You must also have a lot of train travel shops as Kathmandu, Paddy Pallin, Snowgum, etc., but these tend to have serious hiking boots are beyond their needs.
Because of Canada take my adviceSmile Get your shoes you want, use good socks, etc., but a good way to keep your feet warm is to use a good leader covering.90% of your heat loss through the head. I put one here in Canada a year, and you should be fine.
I put on my boots and socks from normal walking, with an additional layer of thick socks or stockings, very cold days. At that time I lived in Darwin, then there should be no problems Crafts Canberra. The scouts are beautiful, and there is no need to go expensive hiking boots if you just planning to walk around the city.
