My favorite hiking boots are not boots. I am with shoes or running shoes approach. I have never had problems with my ankle, but then you might want something with extra support.

I have a set of hiking boots Salomon in conflict over, they are extremely light and water friendly, but they do not cover the ankle, if it is a problem for you. I do not remember the name, though. I can not go for the classic leather boot thick hiking and sandals ultimate act like buckets of sand.
